Live location data from 23,000+ buses at once.

A large public transit network needed to see its fleet as it moves, not minutes later. We architected a streaming spatial analytics platform on Oracle Cloud that ingests live location data from more than 23,000 buses concurrently and drives low-latency dashboards for transit control.

The challenge

During peak events, transit control has to know where every vehicle is right now. That means ingesting a continuous stream of location data from tens of thousands of buses at the same time, joining it accurately against routes and geography, and putting the result in front of operators with low latency.

Batch reporting cannot do that. The client needed a streaming architecture built for concurrent data from the start.

What we built

  • Streaming ETL on OCI Streaming and Kafka, handling concurrent location data from more than 23,000 buses.
  • An Oracle data warehouse for spatial analytics, with accurate spatial joins for vehicle tracking.
  • WebSocket dashboards built with deck.gl and MapLibre, updating as vehicles move.
  • Map integration with Google Maps and OpenStreetMap.
  • Low-latency reports and dashboards for transit control during peak events.

How we delivered it

  • Shape. A streaming architecture on Oracle Cloud, designed for concurrent ingestion rather than batch loads.
  • Build & Integrate. Streaming ETL from OCI Streaming and Kafka into an Oracle data warehouse, tuned for accurate spatial joins.
  • Deploy. Production-tested at scale on Oracle Cloud, serving live dashboards over WebSockets.

The outcome

The platform is live. Transit control sees the fleet as it moves, with spatial analytics, reports, and dashboards that stay current through peak events.

The same patterns apply to any fleet or telemetry stream. See our data engineering and cloud & DevOps capabilities.

Client details are withheld. A detailed walkthrough is available under NDA on request.
